David A. Groves, 89, former cashier and vice president of the First National Bank of Crawfordsville, died in his sleep at his home at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday. He was a member of the First Christian Church in which he was a life elder and where he served as a member of the choir and as church treasurer for many years. Mr. Groves was born Dec. 30, 1875, in Waveland, the son of Aquilla W. and Lenorah Russell Groves. The family moved to a farm north of Waynetown where he was reared. He attended the College Grove Elementary School, graduated from Waynetown High School and then attended Indiana State Teachers College at Terre Haute. Mr. Groves began his banking career at the Waynetown State Bank, followed by employment at banks at Hillsboro and Attica. He went to Wingate in 1900 where he was employed in the Farmers State Bank in that community until he came to Crawfordsville in 1912 and began his association with the First National Bank which continued until his retirement Dec. 31, 1952. He was married to the former Mayme Webb at Wingate on Oct. 5, 1904. Mr. Groves was a former member and treasurer of Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club, and a 50-year member of Montgomery County Lodge No. 50, F & AM, having received his 50-year pin in 1954. He is survived , in addition to his widow, by two sons, Aquilla W. Groves and Charles T. Groves, both of Crawfordsville; three grandchildren, Mrs. Allison Price, Samuel T. Groves and Charles Arthur Groves; a sister, Mrs. V. W. Livengood, now of Lake Wales, Fla., and a cousin. Miss Jessie L. Groves of Crawfordsville. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha, who died at the age of 16 years. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church, with Rev. Howard F. Miller, pastor of the church, in charge. Burial will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery at Wingate. Friends may call at the Hunt & Son Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services for David A. Groves were held Friday morning in the First Christian Church with Rev. Howard F. Miller officiating. Burial was in the Grenlawn Cemetery at Wingate. Serving as pallbearers and assisting with the floral tributes were Stanley Simpson, Leonard Sterrett, Will H. Hays Jr., Richard McClamroch, Darnell Mahorney and Robert Hunt. “How Great Thou Art” was sung by Diana Rhoades, accompanied on the organ by Francis Scott. Mr. Groves, retired banker, died Tuesday evening in his home. – jlr

Crawfordsville – David A. Groves, 89, former cashier and VP of the First National Bank, died in his sleep at his home Tuesday night. Born at Waveland, he was reared on a farm north of Waynetown and graduated from Waynetown High School.  He attended Indiana State Teacher’s College, Terre Haute. He began his banking career in the Waynetown State Bank and later was employed in banks in Hillsboro, Attica and Wingate and moved to Crawfordsville in 1912 and began an association with the First National Bank. He retired in 1952. Mr. Groves was married to Mayme Webb at Wingate in 1904 and was a member and life elder of the First Christian Church. He also sang in the choir and was church treasurer for years. He was a 61-year member of Montgomery County Lodge 50, F&AM. He received the 50-year emblem of gold in 1954.  Surviving with the widow are two sons, Aquilla W. and Charles T. of Crawfordsville and a sister, Mrs. VW Livengood of Lake Wales, Fla.
